Marmion Avenue - Hepburn Avenue / Whitfords Avenue upgrade
The points where Hepburn Avenue and Whitfords Avenue intersect with Marmion Avenue have become congestion hotspots during peak periods with motorists experiencing long delays. Drivers who are turning at these intersections experience longer delays than through motorists due to the length of existing turning lanes.
In 2016, Western Power completed a comprehensive program of works to bury its power services and relocate street lighting at both intersections. Construction to upgrade these two intersections has been underway since November 2016.
This $12 m project is jointly funded by our Traffic Congestion Management Program and Western Australia's Black Spot program.
An additional through-lane will be added at both the northbound and southbound approaches to Marmion Avenue. Turning pockets at all approaches will be extended and southbound there will be a double right turn lane from Marmion Avenue to Hepburn Avenue. Pedestrian crossing facilities will be upgraded and cyclist facilities will be improved.
The left and right turn pockets from Marmion Avenue will be lengthened and upgraded to include two right turn lanes onto Whitfords Avenue from the northern approach. When approaching from the east the left turn lane to Hepburn Avenue will be extended and upgraded to a double left turn with traffic signals. Improvements will be made to the pedestrian crossing and underpass as part of these works.
