About

The program

There is no single solution to the traffic congestion challenge. We recognise that by focusing on multiple strategies and projects, traffic flow improvements will be noticeable through more consistent travel times. These strategies include:

Freewaysidentifying and improving traffic flow at congestion hotspots through the use of technology and new line markings at on ramps and selected off ramps
Arterial road networkaddressing known traffic congestion hotspots through road improvements and improvements in the sequencing of traffic signals
Operationsenhancing our operations to ensure incidents are detected earlier, cleared faster and traffic disruption minimised
Road network informationimproving information provided to road users
Business continuityensuring our infrastructure and operations are available at all times
Peopleinvesting in our people to become world-class network operators

This approach drives our Traffic Congestion Management Program which includes improving the existing road network through the use of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and traditional infrastructure enhancements. It also aids in the state and federal governments’ decision to invest in initiatives that work to keep traffic moving.

Future initiatives

The initiatives currently funded provide a foundation for achieving more consistent travel times for Perth’s road users. We will continue to develop a roadmap featuring different initiative types, which will include:

Smart freeways

Using Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) which include ramp signals, variable speed limits and lane-use management.

This will maximise the use of the existing freeway network to improve speed and increase productivity. Kwinana Freeway (northbound) from Canning Highway to the Narrows Bridge, has been identified as a location for the introduction of a Smart Freeway and the use of ITS due to the physical constraints that prevent traditional widening.

Traffic signal timing improvements

Maintaining optimum signal timings on all key traffic routes based on traffic demand.

Major intersection upgrades

Identifying key congestion hotspots and delivering interventions to increase the throughput of traffic through capacity expansion at these intersections.

Improved travel information

Improving real-time travel information for road users, such as travel times, travel speeds and road conditions. This will be achieved through technology and infrastructure to allow road users to make better informed travel choices.
