Orrong Road Planning Study

Leach Highway to Great Eastern Highway

  • Consultation on the Orrong Road future concept is now complete, and the land required for future construction is protected by the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage.
  • The future concept will improve connectivity for the local community and travel times for traffic travelling through the area.

Overview

Traffic studies have confirmed that Orrong Road currently operates at capacity, with up to 65,000 vehicles per day using the road. As Perth’s population increases, conditions will deteriorate further.

Several options have been considered to determine a preferred concept.

Our preferred concept maintains key local road connections along surface roads, with the majority of a full Orrong Road expressway built below ground level. This expressway will deliver a five-kilometre section with no traffic signals.

Project Update

Public consultation for the revised concept has concluded.

To see the key feedback themes and results, view Orrong Road Results Snapshot PDF.

The Western Australia Planning Commission (WAPC) has supported our concept and the Minister for Planning has now approved a Planning Control Area to protect the proposed road corridor, while the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage prepares an amendment to the Metropolitan Region Scheme (MRS).

It is important to note that this is a long-term planning study to inform required changes to the MRS. There will be further consultation in the future when the concept is funded for additional development.

Funding

This is a planning study only, and no funding is currently available for construction.
